Recent Ideas in Post-Humanism
= Discussion with the kids about cars and "butts"... organisms with exhaust and inputs... how to think about inputs and refuse? (cross-referenced in kid section)
How long until a movie comes out with the Singularity as a plot point?
Short Story plot.... story of a machine that thinks, and dies.... and it's sad
Philip K. Dick: how he sees the future, and thinks about the natural consequences (see my next posting for implications of a conscious machine without full rights)
Charles Stross on the fact that we'll probably never get there -- we'll never colonize Mars, etc. (but could machines get there, without the need for daily sustenance like we have... just the need for energy in almost any form... hydrogen, quantum energy, solar energy from distant dwarf stars, etc., etc..... human beings are a product of the type of energy available to us, which is energy stored in plants and in other animals.... we have to ingest it to be able to use it.... why don't any animals have a chlorophyl (solar-energy) processing facility? Why don't we have turtles with chlorophyl/solar panels?
