On Getting Published

updated posting on

I haven't got around to putting all of my thoughts on the publishing game onto these pages yet. I've got these published elsewhere, and they'll appear here soon.

For now, I'd simply recommend getting a good agent -- which takes months in itself -- as agents are now the gate-keepers for the entire publishing industry (as far as I can tell). Every agent I've spoken to is somewhat overwhelmed, even my highly-recommended agent Jenny Bent (contact information below).

When you get an agent who is interested in reading an excerpt, spend hours, days, weeks -- even months -- getting your excerpt just right. And always send the beginning of the book -- don't send some random excerpt from the middle or the end. And if you feel the beginning is not your best work, then re-write the damn book, so it IS your best work. Publishers, agents, and especially your readers, only have a few pages -- sometimes as little as a few paragraphs or sentences -- to determine whether or not to read your book, much less buy your book.

More excerpts from my past published commentary on the book and publishing industry coming soon!
